Sportshall season begins

2 November, 2019 By Melanie Anning

This weekend sees the first of the 2019/2020 Sussex AA Sportshall fixtures. Sportshall athletics is an indoor mix of fun and competition during the winter months for U11, U13 and U15 athletes. Sussex AA supports two Sportshall leagues which take place at Horsham and Worthing.

Sportshall in Sussex began in 1981 when John Linfield of Horsham Blue Stars promoted two demonstration meetings. In the early days there were only four or five clubs in the county interested in this form of competition but in recent years there has been more widespread interest since UK Athletics adopted Sportshall as a grassroots scheme – a first step into the sport for young people.

John, who is now in his 80's, is still organising the Horsham League and just last month he won an England Athletics award for Services to Athletics.

Competition dates this season are as follows:

Horsham League - Tanbridge House School

Sunday 3rd November 2019
Sunday 15th December 2019
Sunday 19th January 2020
Sunday 9th February 2020

Worthing League - Lancing Manor

Saturday 16th November 2019
Saturday 7th December 2019
Saturday 1st February 2020

Please note that the Regional Finals will be held at Burgess Hill on Sunday 22nd March 2020 and the U11 competition will start in the morning and the U13 / U15 competition will be in the afternoon.
