The 91st Brighton and Hove AC Boxing Day races return with a new title and course. Renamed after Sussex legend, double Olympian Chris Carter, this event will take place at 10:30 am in Preston Park, Brighton, on Tuesday, 26th December. For the first time, both the run and the race walk will be fully contained within the park.
Each lap is approximately 1.1 miles. Participants can choose to run between one and four laps, with the number of laps determined by age. Prizes will be awarded for the best Fancy Dress. Entries are on the day, and registration starts at 10:00. The Race Walk begins at 10:30, followed by the runs at 10:45. The Chalet Cafe and the public toilets will be open.
The suggested entry fee is £5 or whatever you can afford. All profits will go to Chris Carter's choice, Amaze Charity in Brighton, which supports the families of children and young people with disabilities.
History - Six-mile walking races were introduced by Sussex Daily News Athletics reporter Jack Davis (Jackdaw) in the early 1930s on behalf of the Brighton Labour Club. Held every year, except during the War years and Covid-19 lockdowns, the event returned for its 90th Anniversary last year after a three-year hiatus.
In the post-war years, runners were invited to try race walking. In the 1950s, Welsh 400-yard Hurdles champion John Parry delivered an impressive performance. The Race Walking Association awarded medals to all who covered the six-mile course within the hour, a notable achievement.
