Marathons, Great South, Sussex Sports Awards plus ESAA CE catch up

26 October, 2019 By Reg Hook

Competing for the English Masters team at the “Asda Foundation Yorkshire Marathon” at York Crawley’s Katherine Owens had a fine run to place third overall but win the F35 group.

Owens, who has only been running seriously for little more than a year clocked 2:55.14s, which was only a few seconds outside her personal best, which she recorded earlier in the year.

Meanwhile Steyning AC Olympic race walker Ian Richards, had been invited to race walk the marathon course, competing against other M70's who were running. Richards recorded a superb sub four hour clocking of 3:59.42 for a 10th place finish.

Great South Run 5K

Last weekend former British 100km champion, Crawley's Paul Navesey, dropped down a considerable distance to warm up in Portsmouth for tomorrow's Frankfurt Marathon. He won the 5km race in a time of 14:56.  On Sunday he will be representing England over 26.2 miles.

See his post race interview with Athletics Weekly HERE.

Amsterdam Marathon

Competing in Amsterdam last Sunday Hastings Ross Skelton took a massive seven minutes off his personal best to finish the Dutch Marathon in 2:19.21. Skelton, who only ran the distance for the first time at this year's London Marathon, was the first Britain and third European home.

ESAA Combined Events Finals

Isabelle Humphreys from Christ Hospital and Eli Middleton (Worthing College) were both in action in the English Schools Combined events championships at Exeter last month, with the CH girl just missing a personal best total in the Intermediate Heptathlon when placing 15th in a field of 38 athletes.

Primarily a high jumper Humphreys clocked 12.65s for the 80m hurdles before leaping 1.68m in the high jump and putting the shot 9.18m and finishing the first day with a 200m clocking of 28.16m.

On the second day she leapt 5.19m in the long jump and threw the javelin 28.09m before clocking 2: 39.90s for the 800m. These efforts gave her a total of 4268 points just six points short of the total she amassed in June when she qualified for the final which was a pretty good effort at the end of a long tough season.

Competing in the senior Heptathlon Eli Middleton recorded efforts of 18.69s, 1.47m, 8.56m, 30.40s, 4.51m, 23.60m and 2:50.66s for a total of 3143 points which saw her place 19th.

Sussex Sports Awards

After another stunning season, the aforementioned Ian Richards has been shortlisted for Sussex Sports Awards "Sports Personality of the Year" 2019. Brighton and Hove AC's record breaking teenager Amber Anning is in the final three for "Young Sports Personality of the Year"  and Brighton Phoenix's long time coach, Bruce Warren, is up for "Coach of the Year."

The event at the Hilton Metropole hotel in Brighton is on Friday 22nd November and will be hosted by British track and Field legend Kriss Akabusi.
