Sussex Record for Anning, Mullet fourth, YDLg

Competing for the England Schools team in the 15th Jean Humbert Memorial ISF World Schools Athletics Championships at Nancy, France Amber Anning (Brighton & Hove) romped to a convincing victory in the U17 400 metres.

Run as a straight final Anning smashed the Sussex U17 and U20 records with a brilliant 54.23s beating the thirteen year old records set by fellow Brighton & Hove athlete Gaby Howell of 54.7s.

Anning, is believed to be the first ever Sussex winner at these championships, will now turn her attention to the triple jump tomorrow.

Also in France, at Lille in the European Team championships Rob Mullett (Lewes) had an excellent run to finish fourth for Great Britain in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:33.90s to help the Great Britain team into fourth team spot.

YDLg:

After last week’s problems with delays in getting the results of the SALg and YDL (Lower Age group) published Sunday’s Upper Age group results, well two out of three of them, came through overnight and they were good for Sussex.

It was neck and neck for most of the match at Lewes in Division One “C” match. Right up to the end it was touch and go whether Croydon or Team Sussex came first. At one point, quite close to the end of the match, both teams were level on points.

Team Sussex, which draws athletes form the Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Lewes Clubs, was eventually squeezed into second team space with 526 points to the Croydon Club’s winning total of 561. Cambridge Harriers scored 497 in third place and Horsham Blue Star placed fourth of the seven competing team with 314 points.

In the Division One “B” match at Bournemouth Brighton & Hove, including some Worthing athletes, won their match with 370 points to Portsmouth’s 357 and Southampton’s 354 with Chichester’s  placing fourth of the six teams 342 points.

In the tough Premier one match at Reading the Crawley Club faces some of the top teams in the Country and in a six team match, that was won by Blackheath & Bromley with 818 points, the Sussex club struggled into sixth place with 261 points.
