Schools Inter-Counties -UPDATE

20 June, 2017 By Sussex AA

Despite all the travails that hit the Sussex Schools team at Basingstoke on Saturday there were many fine performances by Sussex athletes and several managed to achieve the standards that they had been chasing.

In the Intermediate (U17) boys age group Bailey Wright, who has been carrying all before him in the sprints in Sussex this season was an impressive winner with a personal best of 10.84s while the ever determined Joe Smith battled his way to an impressive victory in the 1500 metres in 4:02.23s with Will Broom not far away in fourth place in 4:07.16s.

Ben Hawkes retained his unbeaten record this season in the hammer throw with a throw of 66.86m, further than anyone else in the County this season and again he got good support from Marcus Jones in third place with 57.20m.

In this age group Henry Reinecker-Found, who is fighting his way back from injury, gained his standard when placing second in the high jump with 1.92m and Sam Odu clocked 13.93s in the 100m hurdles but not in the same race where Alex Clayton crashed to the ground when he was looking to produce another standard time. Luckily Clayton is not as badly damaged as was originally thought.

In the Intermediate girls events there was a sparkling 200m victory for Alyssa White in a nippy 25.72s and another impressive 300m hurdle victory for Jessica Lambert in 45.06s while Naomi Storm shared first place in the pole vault with a clearance of 2.90m.

William Snashall notched up another pole vault win in the Junior (U15) boys event with 3.50m and Adam Lindo kept his clean sheet for this season with a fine long jump of 6.29m and Seb Wallace took second place in 6.14m.

In the hammer throw Daniel McCourt gained a standard placing third with 39.79m and in the 800m Adam Firsht ran a fine race to gain the standard with 2:04.92s which earnt him fifth place.

Abigail Packham was a clear winner of the Junior girls 75m hurdles in 11.21s , Amy Spencer the pole vault with 2.80m and Cleo Tomlinson the long jump with a leap of 5.26m while Millie Noyce took the shot putt with 11.50m and second placed Elise Sutherland took second place with a standard putt of 10.95m.
