Nerurkar Selected for England Schools Team – World Champs – Half-marathon

Almi Nerurkar has been selected to represent England at the ISF World Schools Cross-Country Championships in Paris, France next month.

Following the National Championships last Saturday the English Schools’ Athletic Association has selected a very strong team for this prestigious U18 competition. They hope to build on the incredibly strong performances at last summer's ISF World Schools' Track and Field Championships held in Nancy, France, where BHASVIC's Amber Anning was a member of the victorious girls' team.

Nerurkar (BHASVIC) has had an excellent cross-country season finishing second in the South of England championships and taking the bronze medal in the National Championships at Parliament Hill.

World Indoor Championships.

This weekend Seb Rodger from Eastbourne is the only Sussex athlete in the Great Britain team at the World Indoor Athletics Championships at Birmingham.

Rodger, the Sussex 400m hurdles record holder, is a member of the 4 x 400m relay team and if he gets a run, will compete on Saturday and/or Sunday.

Brighton Half Marathon.

Izzy Coomber from Lewes won the women’s event at last Sunday’s Brighton Half-marathon in breezy conditions. The strong and cold North East wind made conditions uncomfortable for the runners.

Coomber recorded 79:00s placing 39th overall and was well clear of Farnham’s Sarah Bradbury who clocked 79:47s with Arena 80’s Emily Proto taking third place in 81:46s finishing 63rd overall.

Crawley runners James Westlake and veteran Neil Boniface led the Sussex challenge in the men’s race but both missed medals.

Westlake ran nearly five minutes faster than he had at Barns Green back in the autumn, by placing fourth with a nippy 68:45s, a time that was only bettered by one Sussex runner last year.

Boniface filled fifth place in 69.38s while Brighton and Hove’s Kevin Rojas, who was the fastest Sussex runner last year, finished seventh in 70:49s and Ian Leitch (Brighton Phoenix) also cracked the Top Ten placing eighth in 71:26.

The race was won by Paul Pollock (Kent) in 66-57s from former winner Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park) in 68:16s and Paul Whittaker (R.R.C) in 68:34s.
