Sussex Schools Virtual Stars

15 July, 2020 By Reg Hook

More than twenty five Sussex schools' athletes accepted the invitation to compete in the English Schools Track and Field  Virtual competition, in what would have been the 90th English Schools Championships last weekend.

Eight finished in what would have been medal positions had it been the championships.

Brighton College’s Ruby Jerges, who had finished fifth in the English Schools championships last year, topped the Intermediate (U17) long jump list with a splendid leap of 5.63m which was an excellent effort for the first outdoor competition of the season and bettered her silver medal winning Sussex Indoor performance of 5.48m, way back in February.

There was a second place for Varndean’s Dulcie Yelling in her first Junior (U15) Javelin competition with a fine throw of 42.69m to Gloucester's Hannah Lewington’s 45.65m. Lewington is the reigning England U15 national champion.

Dulcie's cousin, Hope Yelling (Davison), leapt 11.20 to also finish second in the Intermediate triple jump and there was another second place, in the senior (U19) 100 metres for Eastbourne sprinter Shania Martlew in 12.6s.

The Junior long jump was a poorly supported event, but Libby Froome leapt 4.82m which earnt her second place while Harriet Yelling (Davison) placed fourth with 4.30m.

In the Inter javelin throw Jemima Caldwell (Crawley) threw an excellent 40.11m to finish third while the Boys also provided a third place in their Inter Javelin throw with James Pratt (Oriel), who is also a fine pole vaulter, reaching a personal best of 49.36m having placed third in the English Schools' Championship last year.

In the Junior boys 100m, Ben Smith clocked a nifty 11.41s for third place.

The following Sussex athletes also finished in the top eight of their events.
