It was a great afternoon for Sussex Schools in the Inter-counties Schools match on Saturday.
In dull and blustery conditions that was a hindrance to most athletes at K2 the Sussex team finished a splendid third in a tight match that saw Kent lead all the way and win with 612 points with Surrey taking second place with 548 points after Sussex had held second place for much of the match.
Sussex had to settle for third place with 515 points to hold off Hampshire who scored 504 points.
The diminutive Poppy Oliver set the afternoon off in fine style when she won the Intermediate (U17) 300m hurdles in her fourth Schools standard time of 45.17s and there was another Hurdles victory in the Inter girls when Abigail Packham clocked an impressive 11.53s into a head wind to win the 80m hurdles.
Kelsey Sutherland set another Pb in the Inter Triple jump for victory with 11.65m and in the throwing events Liz Korczak reached out to 45.76m to take the Javelin throw and Ellie Franklin won the Hammer throw with a Pb of 46.67m.
In the Inter boys events Leo Walker added some three metres to his previous best to win the Discus throw while Sam Illsley took the hammer competition with 53.87m.
Louis Goffin took the Triple jump with 13.14m while on the track Moyo Sargent strode to a fine 400m victory in 49.31s.
The juniors also provided some winning performances with Bailey Smith winning the Boys 200m in 24.19s and an equally impressive run from Aaron Duncan took the 800m in 2:03.38s and Luke Twigger improved his Pb to 47.50m to take the javelin event.
Isabelle Humphreys leapt 1.69m for a High jump victory and Emilie Oakenden won the Pole vault clearing 2.85m while the Junior girl’s sprint relay team finished a fine second in 49.51s only the second time in history that a Sussex Junior girl’s 4 x 100m relay team had ducked inside 50 seconds. The relay team in order was Lucy Kirby, Cleo Tomlinson, Ruby Jerges and Ruby Anning.
