Silvers, Bronze, and a County Record for Sussex on Day 1 of English Schools Champs

12 July, 2025 By Melanie Anning

Flo Matten

Sussex athletes made a strong start at the 100th English Schools Athletics Association Championships in Birmingham, with a clutch of medals and several top-eight finishes.

Jaiten Best

Brighton & Hove AC's Jaiten Best claimed silver in the Inter Girls’ Triple Jump with an excellent 11.59m. Jaiten will now represent England at the Schools' international next weekend.

Her clubmate Flo Matten (main photo), in her first year in the Junior Girls’ age group, also took silver in the Pole Vault, matching her PB of 3.30m.

Lewes AC’s Ava Hayes cleared 3.40m in the Inter Girls’ Pole Vault to win bronze, while clubmate Sylvie Ward equalled her PB of 3.10m for a solid fourth place in the Junior Girls’ event.

Beth Boyes (LEW) also competed in the Inter Girls’ Pole Vault, finishing seventh with 2.90m.

In the Junior Boys' Discus, Archie Oates (Crawley AC) threw 47.63m for fourth, narrowly missing a medal. Unfortunately, Archie was stung by a hornet just before his second round attempt and had to pull the sting out of his arm before throwing. He received medical attention afterwards. Eastbourne's Sonny Rey-Crisp was also fourth in the Junior Boys' shot put with an excellent one-metre PB of 14.35m. Harry Long (CRA) was fifth in the Senior Boys' Javelin (54.44m), with Barney Hastings (B&H) seventh with 52.06m.

Jason Andrew (Sussex Schools) placed sixth in the Junior Boys' Triple Jump with 12.06m, while Leo Hardwick was seventh in the Long Jump (5.69m). In the Senior Girls' Triple Jump, Tai'Bat Owosho (CRA) finished eighth with 10.96m.

A highlight at the end of the day came in the relay, where Brighton & Hove AC’s Jesse Sobrasuaipiri, Charlie Fisher, Sonny Ryder and Louis Wilson broke the Sussex U20M 4x100m record with a clocking of 41.99s, in fifth place. Our Junior Boys also came fifth in 47.79s.
