Golds for Howie, Riley, Busari and Strevens in a 12-medal haul for Sussex at the Schools’ Champs

16 July, 2024 By Melanie Anning

Worthing’s *Alice Howie has made a habit of winning hammer titles at the English Schools’ championships, and she continued her streak by successfully defending her Inter Girls title with a throw of 57.56m, marking her third victory in a row.

Alice was our solo gold medallist on day one, but there was plenty of podium action elsewhere for the Sussex team, and it was all in the field events. Both our Junior Boys discus entries made the podium; Brighton and Hove’s Noah Walker won silver with a throw of 41.94m, and his teammate Archie Oates (CRA) took bronze with 37.96m.

For the Inter Boys’ Barney Hastings (B&H) added to the county's first-day medal haul with a bronze medal after launching his javelin out to 57.22m.

Dulcie Yelling

Day two of the Champs began with a silver medal for Brighton’s Dulcie Yelling in the Senior Girls' javelin with a throw of 43.98m. It was an excellent result, especially after a season of injury, and it was also an upgrade from last year’s bronze medal.

Braimoh Busari

'Dominance' might be Crawley athlete *Braimoh Busari’s middle name! He went into the Inter Boys pole vault competition as the UK’s top-ranked under-17 and more than delivered with a nine-centimetre personal best of 4.50m, to win the title by a massive 30 centimetres.

Eleanor Strevens

Separated by the width of a running vest, Senior Girl Eleanor Strevens (EBR) edged ahead of Cumbria’s Sarah Smith to win the 800m crown by 0.07 seconds in a hard-fought race, clocking 2:09.36.

B&H’s Alexander Riley claimed a glorious 1500m gold in his last-ever Schools race. In a tactical run, it took a sprint finish for him to take the title in 3:54.59, an upgrade from last year's silver!

There must have been something in the air, as the 1500m was the event in which Sussex Schools’ won the most medals.

First-year under-15 Isabella Buchanan of HY AC ran a four-second PB of 4:35.86 to secure silver in the Junior Girls race.

Senior Girl Stephanie Shaw (CRA) captured the bronze medal with a time of 4:27.71.

Isabella Buchanan

Brighton’s Julieana Walsh also won bronze in the 1500m Inter Girls Steeplechase final with a five-second personal best of 5:09.39, while her teammate Alice Cox (CRA) placed 4th with a two-second PB of 5:09.73.

George Gilbert (B&H) earned bronze in the Junior Boys 1500m race with a time of 4:09.71.

*Alice and Braimoh have been selected to represent England in the Schools' home nations international next weekend. Huge congratulations to you both.
