Girls stole the show at the Sussex Schools Championships with five record breaking performances.
The first CBP was in the junior girls 1500m where Isabella Buchanan ran a stunning time of 4:35.83.
Shortly after in the same event, but senior girl age group, Rae Le Fay clocked 4:35.83. Later on in the day Rae went on to run 5:02.22 in the 1500m steeplechase, also a CBP.
In the past few months, inter girl, Ava James, has shone in every event she attempts, but it was the 1500m steeplechase she competed in on Saturday. With a CBP and PB time of 4:56.92, Ava is comfortably ranked number 1 in the UK.
Moving away from the endurance events, Jessica Bliss (senior girl) enjoyed achieving a CBP in the 100mH in 14.49.
Inter girl Alice Howie’s record at the Sussex School is second to none having thrown CBPs every year she has competed and this year’s event at the K2, Crawley, was no different. With a throw of 59.73, outside her PB of 62.44, Alice is very much on top of the UK rankings.
Other stand out medal performances on the day included golds for Jaiten Best (inter girl) 11.04 in the triple jump, Sophie Bliss (junior girl) 36.40 in the javelin, Nathan Burge ran 37.90 in the junior boys’ 300m, Thomas Matthews (4:35.01) in the inter boys steeplechase, George Gilbert (4:17.81) in the junior boys 1500m and silver for Alice Cox in the inter girls steeplechase in 5:13.19.
The ongoing inter boys javelin battle continued with Harry Long winning (54.70) and Barney Hastings silver (53.28).
All of these athletes are currently ranked in the top 5 in the country.
Following Saturday’s competition, the top 2 in every event have been invited to represent Sussex at the South East Inter Counties Track & Field Championships taking place this coming Saturday at the Stone X stadium, London.
The Schools team are also busy making selections for the ESAA Track and Field Champs in July. Selections for this are based on a variety of criteria. These include reaching one of the two standards (entry or national), where athletes placed at the Sussex Schools Champs and at the South East Inter Counties this coming Saturday. As well as this selectors will be looking at where athletes rank nationally. Selection is not guaranteed by any one of these criteria.
The first wave of selected athletes will be invited this week, with the remaining spaces allocated next week.
