There was a mixed bag of results for Sussex's two under-20 athletes representing Team GB at the European Junior Championships in Boras, Sweden.
First up this morning was Worthing's star hammer thrower, Ben Hawkes. He was agonisingly close to qualifying after his second round throw of 69.68m. Only the top 12 went through and Hawkes was 13th, losing out by just eight centimetres to his GB team mate Bayley Campbell.
An hour later Brighton's Amber Anning, drawn in the outside lane, ran blind to win her heat of the 400m in a comfortable 53.68 seconds. Anning qualified second fastest overall for Friday evening's semi-finals, with Russian neutral athlete and Euro rankings leader, Polina Miller running 52.87s to take the final heat.
Under-17 Inter-Counties
Many of Sussex's leading under-17 athletes will be heading to Chelmsford on Sunday for the annual fixture in which eight of the strongest counties in the region compete for honours.
On Saturday English Schools Champions Lizzie Korczak (javelin) and Pyers Lockwood (400mH) will be competing in the SIAB Schools international. Korczak win the competition in Grangemouth last year and will be looking to defend her title. It is Lockwood's first international vest. He is hoping to zip over to Essex on Sunday to represent the county.
