Seventy of Sussex's leading young athletes have arrived in Birmingham for the 89th English Schools' Track & Field Championships on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th of July.
With next week's European under-20 Championships taking out some of the leading medal contenders at senior and inter level, including Worthing College's Ben Hawkes (Hammer) and BHASVIC's Amber Anning (400m), the results are far less predictable.
Defending senior girl pole vault champion, Natasha Purchas (Collyers), has not been consistent this season, but she has always been a big occasion performer. Brighton College's Lizzie Korkzac enters the inter girls javelin competition ranked third but will be hoping to retain her title and make it three wins in a row. Another champion from last year Cleo Tomlinson (The Weald) has moved up an age group to the inter girls, where she and Sussex under-17 record holder Ruby Jerges (Brighton College) will be competing in the long jump.
Hazelwick's Jessica Lambert and Hurst's Grace Vans Agnew were fourth and sixth in last month's Nationals and both will be vying for medals in the senior girls 400m hurdles, if all goes to plan.
Meanwhile, on the field, Italian junior international, Mame Diarra Sow, who is studying English at Crawley College, has jumped 12.92m this season and goes into the senior girls competition ranked second in the field.
Inter boy, Pyers Lockwood (Claverham), is ranked third over 400m hurdles as is inter girl, Poppy Oliver (Oriel High), who was the bronze medallist last year.
Beth Cook (Roedean Moira House), is an English Schools Champion in cross country and will be hoping to replicate her winter form on the track over 3000m where she goes in ranked second in the UK but first in the competition.
Priory schoolmates Emilie Oakden and Amelia Hatchard go into the junior girls pole vault ranked first and second and Oriel's James Pratt is ranked third in the junior boys. They are all coached at Lewes by Rick Pilling and they hope to continue the county's rich tradition of medalling in this event.
Junior girl Noa Maoundus (Hazelwick) is presently ranked fifth in the UK over 75m hurdles and has been improving her flat speed over 100m and 200m every time she competes, so could be a real medal contender.
