To all intents and purposes, the cross country season comes to an end at the Hop Farm, Paddock Wood, in Kent on Saturday with the England Schools Cross-Country Championships.
It was this event in 2020 that closed down athletics before the first lockdown and schools' athletics has suffered very much in the intervening period. It is thanks mainly to a small group of teachers, led by Leanne Buxton and Simon Lilley that Sussex participation has been possible.
After the mixed results at Loughborough last weekend at the CAU championships, it is ironic that Katherine Haslip, the only Sussex winner does not feature in the Sussex Schools teams.
The age groupings for Schools events are a year different to those used for the National Athletics competitions and she will not be old enough for two more years.
Because of this taking, last week’s results as a guide to how the teams will far this coming weekend, is not possible but on paper the Junior Girls and Intermediate Boys teams appear to be the strongest but any of the teams could be surprise packets.
Individually it is possibly Miles Waterworth, Intermediate, or Grace Tuesday, Junior, who have both performed consistently well this season, will shine brightest on the day.
