For the first time since the pandemic, eighteen months back, we have a schools' track and field competition and the South of England Champs - making for a very busy weekend of athletics.
Sussex Schools are putting on their “trials” on the same date that would usually be used for the Championships at the K2 centre at Crawley. This year however they are trials to help select a team for the English Schools in July and will not be championships and will be confined to the Junior (U15) and Intermediate (U17) age groups. Because areas have been unable to hold their championships, entrants have been made directly by individual athletes who have achieved an Area Standard.
The athletes will arrive one hour before their competition accompanied by just one parent or coach and after their competition must leave the venue.
Most of the arrangements for this event has been undertaken by Schools Championship secretary, Leanne Buxton.
Also this weekend the South of England are holding their senior championship on Saturday and Sunday at Bedford. These championships incorporate the U20 events which cover the Senior (U19) schools age group and it is expected that along with the leading Sussex senior athletes, those U19 athletes, with an eye of a place in the Sussex Schools team, will also be involved.
A record for Cameron.
Earlier this week, Cameron Fillery from Saltdean, improved his Sussex senior 110m hurdles record with a brilliant clocking of 13.47s and that makes him, currently, the third fastest British athlete this season.
