It is the turn of the Young Athletes this weekend to get down to League competition when the Lower Division of the “YDL” matches are held on Saturday.
Four Sussex teams are in Division One of the Southern Area of the “YDL” with Brighton & Hove and Lewes going to Medway in East 1 while Crawley, in West 1, have a home fixture at K2, with Horsham Blue Star amongst the guests.
In East 2 Worthing have a home fixture but are holding the match at Withdean where Hastings and East Grinstead will be guests while the athletes from Chichester have to wait another week for their match, which will be at Portsmouth.
The London Marathon will dominate the scene on Sunday and it is expected that, despite the recent Brighton Marathon, many Sussex runners will be competing.
UK Sportshall Final
Three Sussex athletes will feature in the UK Sportshall Finals in Manchester this weekend. Horsham Blue Star youngsters Cleo Tomlinson and Seb Wallace have both qualified as individuals for the Standing Triple Jump as the leading competitors from the under 13 regional finals. They will both also compete in the non-scoring 2-lap race.
Meanwhile last year's Under 15 All Rounder Champion - Brighton's Amber Anning - is carrying out her last duty as a Sportshall Ambassador by attending the Under 15 final on Saturday to encourage and support those vying to succeed her.
Athletes such as Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Britain's fastest woman, Dina Asher Smith, competed in Sportshall and many other current members of the GB & NI Athletics Team experienced their first taste of Athletics through Sportshall competition. Morgan Lake, the UK Junior High Jump record holder, won the Under 15’s Sportshall All Rounder competition in 2011 so this weekend is a chance to see the athletic stars of the future at the start of their sporting careers.
