Tomer Tarragano was in first class form on Saturday in the Sussex Cross Country League senior men’s race at Stanmer Park.
The Brighton and Hove AC under 20 athlete won by a clear margin helping his team extend their lead in the league after 3 fixtures.
Brighton and Hove currently have 198 points in division one - 289 clear of Brighton Phoenix in second (487) and Lewes AC (548).
In the race itself, another Under 20, Leo Brewer (Brighton Phoenix) was second with Haywards Heath Harrier, Chris Smith, third.
The senior men’s race marked the final event on a day that had seen a fine display of cross country running.
In her first Sussex league race this season, Beth Cook, didn’t disappoint. TheBodyworks athlete, who is only a first year Under 17, won the senior women’s race by a distance. Annabel Morton, Horsham Blue Star Under 20, was second and Henrietta Tarasewicz (O35) third.
Second to Cook in the Under 17 age group was Brighton Phoenix’s Milly Dickinson and third Lois Dooley (Brighton and Hove).
Brighton Phoenix took the team title on the day and lead after 3 matches with Brighton and Hove A in the silver position.
The day, where the weather was a dream compared to the fixture three weeks previous, started with the Under 11 races where Crawley’s Jennifer Klein won the girls and Brighton and Hove’s Raphael O’Kelly the boys.
Dulcie Yelling (Brighton and Hove) made it three out of three in the league so far winning the Under 13 girls’ race.
Crawley team-mates Rihanon Daniels and Anna Fox were second and third respectively. On the day and after 3 races, Crawley sit in first position with Brighton and Hove second and Lewes third.
Haywards Heath Harrier, Arun Khursheed, pushed Barney Hastings hard in the Under 13 boys’ race but it was the Lewes athlete who pulled ahead in the end. Chichester’s Joshua Dunne found some great strength towards the end for a sprint finish to come in third just behind Khursheed.
It is the Brighton and Hove team though that took the top points on the day. They remain top of the league with 64 points while Brighton Phoenix are in second (105 points) and Chichester third (116).
Daisy Burton, Bodyworks, stormed ahead in the Under 15 girls’ race ahead of Eadie Yelling (Brighton and Hove) in second and Amelia Cox (Crawley) in third.
Brighton and Hove remain in first with 65 points, Eastbourne/Team Bodyworks are second with 84 and Crawley third with 97.
It went right to the wire in the Under 15 boys race with Luc Best (Crawley) just winning from Ben Connolly (Brighton Phoenix).
Luke Newton (Crawley) was third. Crawley are easily in the top spot after 3 races with just 29 points to Lewes on 95 and Brighton and Hove on 135.
In the Under 17 boys’ race, Bodyworks were victorious again with Hamish Reilly winning to Hastings’ athletes Isaac Elam and Jonah Davies in second and third.
In the league itself Lewes are top with 44 points, Crawley second on 62 and Hastings third with 78.
There’s all to run for in the men’s Veteran’s races. Brighton and Hove AC are 4 points clear of Lewes who in turn are only 6 points ahead of Haywards Heath Harriers. A very different picture in the women’s Vet League. Arena 80 are way ahead on 34 points, Eastbourne/Bodyworks second on 98 and Brighton and Hove third on 104.
A downside on the day was the cars who parked inconsiderately along the road making it difficult for passing buses and cars. This could jeopardise the fixture for next year.
However, more than 600 runners turned out for the races helping to make it another great league fixture. As always, a big thank you to all the officials, marshals and volunteers who gave valuable time to ensure everything ran smoothly.
