A highly successful Worthing 10k took place on Sunday in beautiful, if hot, conditions with a record number of 2365 runners taking part.
An in-form James Westlake of Crawley AC claimed victory in a time of 30.31 breaking the course record. Andy Greenleaf of Serpentine Running Club was second in 30.58 and Jonathan Cornish of Hercules Wimbledon was the bronze medallist in 31.14.
In the women's race Elspeth Turner (Horsham) a V50, won in a time of 37.22, which is her fastest 10k road run for 14 years. Coincidentally in that 2004 run, she was first female home on the old Worthing 10k course which started and finished at the track. Rebecca Bunting of London Heathsideclaimed silver in 37.50, with Emma Gill of Brighton & Hove AC third in 39.21.
Veteran runners produced many other strong performances. Neil Boniface of Crawley AC won the Male V40 category in 32:28 placing sixth overall, and Brighton & Hove's Graham Godden clinched theV50 place in a time of 34.27. Mark Hargreaves of City of Portsmouth AC won the V60 category in 40.27.
Meanwhile Pia Ross was the second female V50 in 42.13, closely followed by Portslade's V50 - Geraldine Moffat - in 42:54. Pippa Pinn was the leading V40 in 44.16 and Ann Anscomb was the first V60 in 49.55.
The race has been running for 28 years with yesterday's race a 10th anniversary celebration on the current course.
