Waltz time for Sussex Athletes

26 February, 2020 By Reg Hook

It was Gold and Silver waltz time for Sussex athletes at the weekend’s British Indoor championships, where the cancellation of the World Championships affected the standard of competition and many top athletes decided to concentrate on preparing hopefully for the Tokyo Olympics.

At Glasgow, where the senior championships were, George Mills (Brighton Phoenix) the former English Schools 1500m champion when he was back in his home County of Yorkshire, proved the most robust of the runners on show to win the 1,500m crown in 3:50.69s.

There were also a couple of fine silver medal performances at Glasgow with Crawley’s Holly Turner winning her heat of the 400m in 54.81s and improving to 54.22s in the final for second place behind the talented Windsor 400m hurdles specialist, Jessie Knight - a full time primary  school teacher - who was well clear in 52.76s.

The second silver medal went at Saltdean’s Cameron Fillery who also chased home the up and coming pretender in the 60m hurdles, Dave King from Plymouth clocking 7.85s to the winner’s 7.22s.

There was also a fine run from Beth Kidger (Phoenix) in the 1500m where she just missed a medal placing fourth in 4:22.75s.
