UK Pole vault best for Gemma

6 June, 2017 By Sussex AA

Competing in the pole vault at the U15 League match (West) in Horsham on Friday, Lewes AC's Gemma Tutton - an under 13 athlete - smashed her own UK record by 15 centimetres, with a magnificent height of 3.35m.

Gemma had to wait over an hour before entering the competition and when she cleared 2.80m with her first jump, it was obvious a big jump was a possibility.

The bar was moved to 3 metres which, after a couple of hiccups, she cleared on her third attempt. Gemma then sailed over the next height of 3.21m setting a new UK under 13 record. Next, in a bold move the bar was raised to 3.35m and again Gemma cleared this easily first time.

Unfortunately the competition was held up for 20 minutes after the bar broke. With these tricky conditions Gemma nevertheless only just missed clearing 3.43m that would have pushed the UK record to even greater heights.
