There were a clutch of medals for Sussex athletes at the South of England Indoor championships at Lee Valley over the weekend with a clean sweep in the senior 800 metres for Brighton Phoenix athletes.
In fact Phoenix had four athletes through to the final of the senior 800m with George Mills, a Brighton University Student who is still only 19, winning the title in 1:50.72s ahead of Spencer Thomas 1:51.28s and Archie Davies 1:52.14 with Finley Bigg filling fifth place in 1:55.45s.
A second gold medal came the way of Sussex when Brighton & Hove’s Amber Anning, who lost much of last year’s track season through injury retained her U20 200 metre title comfortably in 24.34s.
There was a silver medal for Crawley’s Grace Vans Agnew in the U20 400m in 58.22s not far ahead of club mate Jessica Lambert who took the bronze medal in 58.61 and Crawley’s Holly Turner took bronze in the senior 400 metres in 56.18s.
There were further bronze medals in U20 events for Moyo Sargent (Eastbourne) in the 400m in 50.21s and Brighton & Hove’s Tom Eames, the reigning 1500m champion whose track season was also disrupted through injury, in 1:55.45s while Luca Bigg (Phoenix) finished fourth in the same race in 1:56.86s.
Bryn Smith (Eastbourne) finished fifth in the U20 200m in 22.34s but club mate Bailey Wright qualified for the final of the 100m but had to withdraw from the final.
In the Field events Jack Harris from Lewes had a fine U20 pole vault to clear 4.80m to take the silver medal while Brighton & Hove’s Rafe Brooks leapt 6.41 to take bronze in the U20 long jump and George Turner (Crawley) just missed matching his sisters bronze medal by finishing fourth in the senior pole vault clearing 4.90m while Henry Reinecker-Found (Brighton & Hove) cleared 1.90m for fifth place in the U20 high jump.
