Three Sussex athletes were included in the South of England Under 20 team to contest the “Welsh U20 International” at Cardiff where they collected two golds and one bronze medal.
The match saw Under 20 teams from the Midlands, North and South face a Welsh U20 squad.
It was Brighton & Hove’s Anna Short and Crawley’s Lillie Franks returned with gold medals as both continued with what has been their best seasons to date.
Short turned in another sparkling run over the sport sprint sweeping to victory in the women’s 100m event in 12.10sec.
Franks, who is still in the U17 age group, and who just missed a medal at the English Schools earlier in the month, improved on her English Schools effort by soaring over 1.69m for victory.
The bronze medal came in the 400m hurdles where Katryna Bajorinate (Horsham Blue Star) clocked 66.39s and like Short and Franks she has had a fine season.
Her best effort has been rather overlooked as she did it in English Schools senior age group in the colours of the Surrey Schools. There was so much to write about the brilliant efforts of this year’s Sussex Schools team that Bajorinate’s fourth place in 64.78s did not feature in the Sussex report. Incidentally this effort lifts her to eighth place on the Sussex All-time list.
