Lee Emanuel from Hastings was one of just a few British athletes who performed up to form in the World Indoor Championships at Portland Oregon.
Emanuel, who again rose to the occasion at a Major championship, to make the final of the 3000m acquitted himself well in a slow run tactical final to finish in sixth place in 8:00.70.
Hastings Half-Marathon.
Kenyan Robert Mbithi, who had won the Bath Half-marathon the previous weekend turned up at Hastings on Sunday and collected another Road Running title.
Apart from having to fight into the teeth of a chill North East wind up the long steep drag to the back of the town soon after the start conditions were not too bad and the final mile long canter along the coast road to the finish meant many of the leading runners were flying.
Mbithi proved a run-a-way winner putting nearly six minutes between himself and fellow countryman Jonas Cheriyot clocking 64:43 to 70:54 with Hastings runner Rhys Boorman turning in cracking run to take the bronze medal and first English runner award in 72:40.
Fellow Hastings runner and frequent leading Sussex performer in this event Dan Anderson filled fifth place in 75:20.
Eastleigh 10k.
Along the coast at Eastleigh, without any sign of a Kenyan invasion, Sussex runners were well to the fore in the 10km Road Race.
Adam Hickey from Southend strode to a convincing victory in 29;24 over Chichester’s Chris Zablocki Who also ducked inside 30 minutes taking second place in 29:48 while Howard Bristow (Brighton & Hove) clocked 30:57 in third place and he was followed by club mate Stephen Ferroni who recorded 31:35 in fourth place.
Darryl Hards (Brighton Phoenix) finished in seventh spot in 31:43 and Brighton & Hove’s Max Dumbrell ninth in 31:51.
James McCarthy (Brighton Phoenix) finished 12th in 31:56, James Baker (Chichester) 13th in 32:03 and James Turner (Brighton & Hove) 14th in 32:15.
Rebecca Moore (Chichester) was the first Sussex woman to finish placings second, 48th overall, in 34:17.
Year 7/8 Inter-Counties.
Bethany Cook romped away with the Year 7 race at the South East Schools Inter-counties event at Popham Airport in Hampshire on Saturday.
Cook did not take any prisoners as she steamed away from the field from the gun and eventually cruised home some sixty metres clear of her nearest rival, Masie Collis from Surrey, clocking 9:24 to 9:45.
Rebecca Losh also had a fine run and was next home for Sussex in 12th place with the team placing fourth.
There was another fine run in the Year 8 girl’s race when Lois Dooley finished in fourth spot with Grace Bernarde also grabbing a Top Twenty placing in 16th while the team filled fifth place.
Callum Stone led the Year 8 Boys team home in seventh place with Will Carey in 17th place and the team finishing fifth while Dylan Hanslow was the only Sussex runner to make the Top twenty in the Y13 boys race placing 13th and the team filled sixth place.
