A successful weekend for Sussex athletes at the South of England Combined Events championships at Horspath, Oxford saw a clutch of medals, including two titles, for Sussex.
The senior and under 20 women’s competitions were held in conjunction and Sussex dominated filling the first four places.
Elise Lovell (Hastings) led from start to finish in the senior event clocking 14.02s in the 100m hurdles, leaping 1.64m in the high jump putting the shot 9.86m before completing her first day exertions with 25.05s in the 200 metres. On Day Two Lovell leapt 5.89m threw the javelin 31.80m and ran the 800 metres in 2:22.04s to score 5284 points.
It was Brighton and Hove’s Becky Owen who took second place in the senior competition with 4457 points.
Second in the competition was Katie Garland (Brighton & Hove) who won the under 20 title scoring 4994 points after stringing together (14.79s, 1.67m 10.02m, 26.17s, 5.64m, 31.50m and 2:25.73s).
Taking second place in the junior championship was Crawley’s Beth Crocker who scored 3930 points.
There was also a second place for Brighton & Hove’s Matt Smith in the under 20 men’s decathlon with a total of 5705 points
World Junior Championships.
Brighton Phoenix’s Archie Davis had bad luck on the first day of the World Junior Championships at Bydgoszcz in Poland.
Running in the slow second heat of the 1500m Davis took an early tumble, recovered and tried to run wide off the final bend down the field but he was spent and finished in 11th place in 3:54.57 and failed to make it through to the final.
Davis however was one of the youngest competitors in the event and will still be young enough to compete in the European Junior Championships next year.
