Like their male club mates at Bedford on Saturday the Crawley women’s team had a tough time in the opening round of Division One in the UK Women’s Athletic League at Bristol.
The eight club match was won by the Woodford Green club with 216 points and in a close match Crawley was squeezed into eighth place with 1016 points.
Sprinter Kim Baptiste was the only “A” winner clocking 24.35s after taking a close fourth place in the 100m in 12.29s.
Elise Lovell contested several events during the day picking up second place in the long jump with 5.78m and the 100m hurdles in 14.08s while team manager Amy Barclay ran a nifty 14.57s to finish second in the “B” hurdles.
At Bedford on Saturday the Brighton & Hove men’s team repeated their fourth team placing of the first match in Division four of the British Athletics League with 270 points, one hundred points adrift of match winners Derby.
Max Dumbrell and Howard Bristow provided a clean sweep in the 5,000m in useful times with Dumbrell clocking a personal best of 15:04.40s winning the “A” race and County champion Howard taking the “B” race in 15:07.60s.
Birmingham Diamond League
Rob Mullett (Lewes) who achieved the steeplechase qualifying time for “Rio” a couple of weeks back faced a strong international field and acquitted himself well at the Birmingham Diamond League on Sunday.
Despite placing tenth he was the first British athlete to finish clocking his second fastest time to date of 8:31.13s.
Worthing 10km Road Race
Jon Pepper (Brighton Phoenix) and Brighton & Hove’s Kevin Rojas produced another close battle in the Worthing 10k road race on Sunday before the Phoenix runner managed to break clear to win in 32:28s some twenty metres of Rojas who clocked 32:34.
Glen Driver from Haywards Heath had a fine run but was more than one minute adrift in third place clocking 33:52s while Faye Fullerton (Havering) was the first woman to finish placing 10th overall in 35:38s.
The promoting club’s Helen Buller was second in the women’s race clocking 37:36s in 32nd place and veteran Caroline Hoyte (Arena 80) filled third place (36th) in 37:47s.
