Extreme weather conditions marked the third Under 15 Sussex League fixture at Withdean on Friday night.
With the match nearly abandoned due to lashing rain, officials and volunteers went over and beyond to ensure the event went ahead.
And the brave youngsters did their part too, battling through, with some reaching new heights.
One of these being Crawley AC’s Isabella Akpoveta clocking two league records on the night. First, she broke her own 12.4 record with a 12.2 in the 100m, before going on to run 25.9 in the 200m (0.2 faster than Poppy Oliver’s from 2017).
Fellow Crawley athlete Cristiano Anah was also on sprinting form taking Charlie Fisher’s 100m boys record of 11.4 from last year running 11.3.
Another notable performance included Saul Bennett’s 2.05.8 in the boys’ 800m. The young Brighton & Hove AC athlete will be gunning for Ben Collins’s record of 2.04.4 at the final in September.
The pole vault competition feels doomed in the league this year. It couldn’t take place at the first two fixtures due to broken parts. Fixed and ready last week, but due to the rain it was too dangerous and had to be abandoned half way. Fingers crossed for more success in September.
As the season is progressing, the Eastbourne Rovers team is getting stronger and stronger, coming third in the first fixture, second in the second and winning on Friday. They totalled 356 points to Brighton in second on 296 and Crawley third on 239. After each fixture the winning team is allocated 9 points, second 8, third 7 and so on.
The scene is certainly set for an exciting final in September with Brighton and Hove AC currently sitting on 26 league points, Eastbourne on 24 and Crawley on 22.
