History was turned upside down at Hastings on Saturday when the home team won the Battle of Hastings.
Four Sussex teams were lined up to face Holland Sports from Kent in this Division 3 SW it was the Hastings team who swept away the challengers notching up a marvellous total of 285 points for a convincing victory.
East Grinstead scored 198 in seconds place after a match long battle with Horsham Blue Star who scored 185, Lewes/Haywards Heath 152 and Holland Sports 125.
Elise Lovell went nap for the promoting club winning the 100m hurdles in 14.3, the high jump with 1.55m, long jumped 5.58m, putt the shot 9.74 and threw the javelin 29.95m while club-mate Max Thomas ran an impressive 800m to win as he liked in 1:57.2s and these two won the Men of the Match Awards.
Following her fine efforts the previous weekend East Grinstead’s Abby Beswick repeated her sprint double clocking 12.7 and a personal best of 25.0 for the 200m. Although she was again over five metres again her leap of 5.01m only earnt her second place behind Lovell.
The Sussex pole vaulters were in good form with Horsham’s Calum Neil winning the men’s event clearing 3.80m and Livvy Connor (Lewes) clearing 3.10m to win the women’s event and she also took the triple jump with 11.14m.
A few miles along the coast at Eastbourne the home team shared top billing with Belgrave Harriers after two recounts, which had made Eastbourne the winners and the final results were then confirmed as a dead heat with both teams scoring 199 points to Dartford’s 174 and Ashford’s 159.
Sofia Cunningham, who is still in the U17 age group, completed a fine sprint double with two English School’s standard runs of 12.2s and 25.8s
Joe Morris also turned in a winning performance for the home club putting 12.44m to win the shot putt while Erica Francis won the women’s shot putt with 9.75m and the discus throw with 28.72m as well as throwing the hammer 35.64m to take second place.
More results affecting Sussex teams have yet to be published.
