Sussex athletes taking part in the second cross country league fixture at Lancing on Saturday held one minute's silence in honour of the two teenage Aldershot Farnham & District athletes who died whilst training at their club last week.
The Athletics Community was rocked by the news of the deaths of Stacey Burrows, 16, and Lucy Pygott, 17, who were involved in a collision with a vehicle on a pedestrian crossing as they were warming up at the start of a training session.
Lucy was the UK’s top ranked Under 17 over 3000m and was a bronze medallist for Team GB at this year’s inaugural European Youth Athletics Championships in Tblisi. Stacey was the 2016 Hampshire Champion over 3000m. Both girls trained at AFD under coach Mick Woods.
An unnamed 24-year-old serving soldier was arrested on suspicion of two offences of causing death by dangerous driving, two offences of death by careless driving through drink or drugs and the offence of drink-driving. The arrested soldier has been released on bail until February.
Sussex AA's President Roland Garrad, sent the Association's condolences to the families of the two young athletes and to the running community of AFD.
