A couple of weeks back, the Sussex 10,000m walking championships saw a new champion after Ian Richards’ (Steyning, now M75) domination of the event in recent years. Ian has been injured for a few months, and he is not yet back to true race walking style. He came under the eyes of the judges and was DQ’d.
David Crane from Surrey Walking Club, who is only in the M40 age group, was a comfortable winner in 55:36.89s and M65 Trevor Jones (Steyning) was the only other walker to crack the sixty minutes barrier in 57.00.7s. To walk 6¼ miles within the hour is quite an achievement at any age, let alone 65 years. Taking the bronze medal was a former champion, Richard Emsley (Desborough R.C.), who is also in the M65 age group in 62:54.8s.
