Sussex Scoops Top Spot At Sportshall Champs

3 March, 2026 By Kate Matthews

The Sussex under 13 boys were named champions at the South East Regional Sportshall Finals at the weekend.

Scoring 594 points at the annual event, which was held at The Triangle, Burgess Hill, the team won gold for the first time in the county’s history.

Top scoring performances included Crawley’s David Peter Nzeama winning both the 2 lap and the vertical jump, along with Felix Steer (Phoenix) 1st in the 6 lap and Herbie Bellfield (Lewes) 1st in the standing long jump.

The team also won the 8 lap Paarlauf and the 4 x 2 lap relay.

As a result of winning on the day, the team will now progress to the national finals

It was a good day for the county all round with the under 13 girls, under 15 girls and under 15 boys all placing third.

Individually, under 13 girls’ Ada Greenaway (Brighton & Hove) won the 6 lap race whilst team mate Amelia Dorrington won the standing long jump.

Chichester’s Isla Pearson (under 15) won the 4 lap time trial and was part of the 8 lap Paarlauf winning team.

Alongside the under 13 and 15 contest, the Fun In Athletics event for under 11s also took place. The Sussex team looked strong winning overall team silver with 1st place in the 2 + 2 lap relay and Michael Simitsis winning the chest push contest.

It was a great day for the county. Thanks to team managers Andy Hall and Amanda Godfrey for all their hard work in the run up and on the day.
