First year Junior (U15) Cleo Tomlinson won the Sussex Schools Junior Pentathlon title at the Sussex Schools Combined Events championships at K2 on Wednesday.
Tomlinson, from the Weald School, who was beaten into second place in Year 7 Quadrathlon last year started as she meant to go on by storming to a clear win in the 75m hurdles in 12.5s. She followed this with 6.79m in the shot, a high jump of 1.45m, a long jump of 5.08m, which is an English Schools standard and an 800m run in 2:46.9s to give a total of 2585 points, some 200 points clear of Isabelle Humphrey’s from Christ’s Hospital who scored 2379 points.
Spike Gleave (Eastbourne College) was an even more convincing winner of the Boys event with 2418 points to St Andrews’s Tom Ridley who totalled 2164 points.
Both Intermediate events were poorly supported although Jessica Lambert (Hazelwick) looked quite impressive as she amassed 2428 points for victory while Isaac Kofi Obeng (Varndean) won the Year 7 boys crown and Kate Ridley (Davison) the girl’s title.
ROUNDUP
Tucked away in the results from last weekend’s national Heptathlon championships was a remarkable high jump improvement from Katie Garland who won the Under 23 bronze medal.
Garland (Brighton & Hove) added 6 cm to her previous best when clearing 1.76m. This leap was not only the third best jump of the competition it was the best by a Sussex woman this season and the fifth best leap ever by a Sussex woman, not bad for an athlete whose main event would normally be considered as the long jump. She also had her best outdoor long jump of the year with 5.49m and, as already noted became only the fourth Sussex Woman to top 5,000 points for the Heptathlon.
Westminster Miles
There was a cracking run from Robbie Fitzgibbon in the Westminster Mile on Sunday when he was just beaten by Belgrave’s Nick Goolab who retained his the British title and the Sir Roger Bannister trophy in 4:04s to the Brighton Phoenix athlete’s 2:05s.
Brussels
There was some fine running from Sussex hurdlers in the Oordegem International meeting with another fine run from Crawley’s Orla Brothers who again got close to a sub 60 second run in the 400m hurdles. Racing against senior athletes the Crawley U20 athlete clocked 60.39s. Not satisfied with that she was in action at Newham on Monday where she set a personal best over 400m, minus the hurdles, of 55.26s, the fifth fastest time ever by a Sussex woman.
Back in Brussels Brighton & Hove’s Gwilym Cooper ran a season’s best of 53.12s in the 400m hurdles while club mate Cameron Fillery again ducked under 14 seconds in the U20 110m hurdles in 13.77s while County senior champion Matt Hewitt clocked 14.90m over the senior hurdles
