Sussex Runners at the International and World Cross-country Championships

1 May, 2020 By Reg Hook

I have tried to list the Sussex athlete’s Sussex club as well their contemporary team.

I will concentrate on the senior men then list the Senior women, who did not officially compete until 1973 although there were unofficial races in the early thirties and then follow with the Junior and the Short course races.

Even at the start of the 20th Century big London clubs were eager to sign up top class athletes who had been developed by local clubs and several leading Sussex runners were tempted to move.

In 1903 and 1904:  Alfred Shrubb (Horsham Blue Star) though by now a member of South London Harriers was the winner of these inaugural races but they only involved the four home countries and it was not until -

1907, when France joined the competition that they were really regarded as an international event.

It was in that year the Ringmer farmer H.S. (Stan) Pullinger of the Brighton & County Harriers made the team and placed 20th at Scotstoun and was also a member of the winning England team.

1924- Newcastle.        W.M. (Joe) Cotterell (Royal Corps of Signals/Crowborough) was 1st. Joe never gained a full Sussex qualification, although he won the County title in 1925, as he only qualified to compete in Sussex events because he was stationed at Crowborough.

1928 - Ayr                   A.T. (Arthur) Muggeridge (Brighton & County Harriers/South London Harriers) 13th.

1929 - Paris                 W.M. (Joe) Cotterell (Royal Corps of Signals/Crowborough) 1st I do not know if he was still at Crowborough in 1929.
