There were great results for Sussex from the England Combined events championships at Bedford over the weekend including medals and a Sussex record.
Pride of place must go to the former Hastings and Brighton & Hove athlete Peter Moreno who has moved to Windsor and now competes for the local club but still retains his Sussex qualification. Stringing together a fine list of performances including leading the field in the 100m with 11.02s, the 400m in 48.31s, the high hurdles in 14.2s and clearing 1.96m in the high jump he missed taking the overall title by just eleven points.
Moreno however did smash Seb Rodgers five year old County Decathlon record of 6922 points with a massive total of 7252 points to James Finney’s (Leeds) total of 7263 points. Moreno’s effort also improved the Nigerian National record.
Were it not for gale force winds on the first day these totals would have been considerably higher. Saturday’s winds prevented a second record as Elise Lovell from Hastings just missed an England medal and was just 50 points shy of Debbie Woolgar’s (Worthing) 1989 current Sussex Heptathlon record of 5380 points.
Totalling 5330 points Lovell finished fourth but competing for Brighton University she did pick up a silver medal in the BUCS championship, which was held in conjunction. Brighton & Hove’s Katie Garland finished seventh overall topping 5000 points for the first time with 5076 points, which earnt her third place in the U23 championship.
Will Gray Running in an International meeting in Brussels Brighton and Hove's Will Gray ran a remarkable 3000 metres steeplechase removing more than ten seconds off his previous to clock 8:33.0s.
This effort lifts him from sixth to third place on the Sussex All-time List. Gray was one of several Sussex athletes who were on good form at Brussels at the weekend.
