There was plenty to celebrate for Sussex at the 10th World Indoor Championships in Poland last week.
Two golds, a silver, bronze and a world record were among the county highlights at an event that is growing each year.
A total of 89 nations were represented in Torun with standards rising. Jamaican James Beckford won the M40 long jump in excess of 7m and Nigerian Francis Obikwelu flew in the M40 60m in a blistering 6.90 secs.
Steyning Olympian, Ian Richards, was among those achieving high taking almost 20 seconds off the M70 world 3000m race walk record in a time of 15:19.64. This gave him a 50-second victory over Italy’s Ettorino Formentin making up for his disqualification in the recent British Championships.
Ciaran Harvey, Lewes, is improving with age. He swept through the rounds of the M45 60m with ease to claim a bronze medal in the final in 7.30 secs. He also made the final in the 200M and was part of the Gold winning GB 4x200M relay team.
Worthing’s Gavin Stephens M40, who had a great World Outdoor Champs in Malaga last September winning the 400M, took silver in the 200M Final. He had clocked a very impressive 22.39secs to win his semi final.
Despite winning the 1000M last event in the M60 Pentathlon, Eastbourne’s Brian Slaughter was 4th overall with a 3865 point score. Club mate, Grant Stirling M40, was 6th in the triple jump with 12.48.
Hastings’ Wayne Martin claimed 8th in a very tough M55 Pole Vault.
