Sussex fight at Kingsmeadow

3 July, 2017 By Sussex AA

Despite the difficulties in finding team managers for the Annual South East Senior Inter-County match Noel Butler and Elise Lovell did manage to get a few athletes to Kingsmeadow on Sunday to fly the Sussex Flag.

It was very much a skeleton team that struggled into sixth place of the eight competing Counties but there were some outstanding performances by Sussex athletes.

Particularly special was a wonderful high jump by under 20 performer Harry Baker who topped the two metre barrier for the first time and then soared over 2.05m to win the competition and move into seventh place on the Sussex All Time list.

County champion Rebecca Jennings swept to victory in the 100m hurdles in a nifty 15.11sec with Becky Owen winning the “B” race in 16.38s while another double came in 400m with Matthew Overall clocking a personal best of 47.98s for an impressive victory and Chris Dodd clocking 50.02s to take the “B” race.

Coming back from a back injury Chris Scott from Loxwood, making his Sussex debut, moved into fourth place on the Sussex All Time discus list by placing second in that event with a brilliant throw of 53.84m.

There was another fine second place for veteran Caroline Hoyte in the 3000m in 9:45.22s and again Sussex through Rachel Gifford won the “B” event in 10:29.49s while Leigh Walker also chalked up a second place in the pole vault with an ever reliable clearance of 4.30m.

Another veteran in fine form this season is Sarah Hewitt who chalked up two “B” victories winning the shot putt with 9.64m after Leanne Buxton, who is also a veteran, was third in the “A” event with 11.04m and also won the “B” discus throw with 36.89m after U20 athlete Emily Robinson threw 37.97m for third place in the “A” event.

Luke Johnson retained his consistent form of this season by throwing 54.92m for fourth position in the javelin throw. Meanwhile Lillie Franks leapt to new heights with a 1.76m High Jump PB.
