Steyning 10k Walk

9 November, 2017 By Sussex AA

The Open Steyning 10k road walk, that was cancelled due to Storm Brian a few weeks ago, was finally held last weekend. However, the change of date affected the number of walkers.

It was local walkers - Ian Richards and Jimmy Ball who battled for the title.

Conditions were not particularly pleasant and Richards set the pace from the start with Ball hanging on in the early stages. At the half way point Richards led by some two minutes and increased this gap by 40 more seconds over the second half of the race. Richards (M65) crossed the finishing line in 55:24s, comfortably clear of his rival (M50) who clocked 58:10s with Steve Allen (M60) from Barnett well adrift in third place in 64:56s.

There was little to choose between the leaders in the women’s race at 5k with Steyning’s Ann Jones (W60) leading her  club mate Liz Claridge (W40) bu a few metres. However, Jones pulled well clear over the second half to win in 67:46s to 71:53s with Katy Crilley (65) from Surrey taking third spot in 76:25s.
