At last week's Sussex Under 13 Track & Field Development League meeting in Lewes, a parent approached a member of the organising team to express strong dissatisfaction with the competition. They voiced frustration at the number of athletes taking part across various events and questioned the value of including such a broad range of abilities. They went so far as to say they would have preferred the event to be cancelled rather than held in its current form.
We do not know the identity of this individual. However, we want to be absolutely clear: this type of behaviour and attitude has no place at our events.
The Sussex U13 Development League exists to provide opportunities for young athletes of all abilities. As a county, we are proud to offer a welcoming, inclusive environment where children—starting from Under 11—can try our sport, discover what they enjoy, and begin a journey that could lead to lifelong involvement in athletics.
Our U13 events are not about showcasing talent alone. They are designed to help children learn, grow, and build confidence through participation. Every athlete, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to compete and improve.
Sussex AA is run by a small team of dedicated, unpaid volunteers who give up their time to organise events like these for the benefit of athletes across the county. While we welcome constructive feedback and are always open to suggestions that can help us improve, we will not tolerate rudeness, intimidation, or any behaviour that undermines the spirit of development and inclusion at the heart of what we do.
Thank you to all the parents, athletes, and clubs who continue to support these events with enthusiasm, respect, and positivity.
