It went right down to the wire for Tomer Tarragano at the South of England Cross-country championships at Parliament Hill on Saturday.
The Brighton and Hove Under 20 athlete was eventually awarded silver, but the race was so close that
he was given the same time (22.05) as Matthew Stonier, the winner from Invicta East Kent. Chichester’s Ned Potter was 27th in this race.
Another brilliant run by Nicole Taylor, 29.02, (Tonbridge) gave Sussex its second silver medal in the senior women’s race.
Nearly 4000 athletes competed across all races over the day. Whilst the rain held off, conditions underfoot were heavy with thick mud and many athletes struggled to stay on their feet coming down the last hill towards the finish.
The best Sussex team placing went to Crawley in the Under 13 girls in 13th, but it was Brighton and Hove’s Dulcie Yelling, 13.06, who individually shone in this race coming in 10th position. 
There were two Sussex top ten finishers in the Under 15 girls - Isabel Guirdham (Uckfield) in 6th in 17.36, closely followed by Eastbourne’s Eleanor Strevens in 7th in 17.38. Eadie Yelling (Brighton and Hove) was 17thin 18.02.
Harriet Bloor, 20.12, (Hailsham) had a fine run coming 9th in the Under 17 women, as did Isaac Elam (Hastings) in the Under 17 boys finishing in a brilliant 6th position in 22.42. Crawley’s Nathan Buckeridge was 36th, 23.55. 
Thomas Matthews (Brighton and Hove) was the first Sussex boy to cross the line in the Under 13 age category coming 33rd in 12.30. 
In the Under 20 women’s race, Horsham Blue Star's Annabel Morton finished a fantastic 6th in 25.31 and there were two solid runs by Darja Knotkova Hanley (Haywards Heath) in 19th in 27.39 and Naomi Fonteyn (Brighton Phoenix) 24th in 28.09.
Kevin Moore (Brighton and Hove), 31st , was the first Sussex athlete in the senior men’s race.
