Several Sussex athletes gained “Man/Woman of the Match” awards in the first round of this season’s Southern Athletics League while both Crawley, albeit shared, and Hastings both won their matches.
In Division One at Woking the Crawley team had the unusual experience of dead heating on 200 points with the promoting club for first place with Crawley’s Surrey athlete Jo Rowland taking the “Woman of the Match” for her shot putt of 13.08m.
In the Division two East match at Thurrock Eastbourne had a good match to take second team spot to Norwich with 183 points to the winners 217 while in the Division two West match Brighton & Hove were caught in a very close match at Oxford and finished in fourth place with 177.5 points to Reading’s 204. At this match Under 17 sprinter Amber Anning was the “Woman of the Match” with a 200m victory in 24.6s, which lifts her to seventh place on the Sussex senior “All time” list”, though she has run faster indoors this year.
Worthing travelled to Winchester for their Division 3 SW match and scored 148 points to finish second to Plymouth who romped away with the match with 228 points.
In another D3 SW match at Andover Chichester placed third with 153 points to Team Dorset’s 193 points while there was a Sussex Festival in the D3 SE match at Hastings where four Sussex teams clashed.
The home team duly won the encounter with 224 points ahead of Horsham Blue Star who totalled 182, the combined Haywards Heath/Lewes team scored 153 and East Grinstead 126.
Hastings athletes won both the Men’s and Women’s Match awards with Rhys Boorman for his 2km Steeplechase in 6:28.2s and Elise Lovell the women’s award for her long jump of 5.74m. All-rounder Lovell had the top three performances and four of the top six.
