It was not a particularly exciting second round of the Southern Athletics League for Sussex teams last Sunday with only Hastings in Division 3 SE turning in a winning performance at their home match with 294 points to the combined Lewes/Haywards Heath team’s 208 in second place.
Louisa James starred for the home club winning won the Athlete of the match with her winning hammer throw of 60.69m as well as winning the discus throw while Elise Lovell, who had injured herself at the recent National Combined Events championships still managed to win the long jump with 5.70m, the 100m hurdles in 14.1s and also won javelin, shot putt and “B” discus events for the winning team
In Division one at Chelmsford Crawley had a great battle with the home team before having to give second best with 208 points to the home club’s 218 points.
There was a fine win in the shot putt for Sam Heawood who achieved his PB with 15.13m and also won the discus with 31.82m while Crawley’s Surrey all-rounder Jo Rowland notched up five wins including a 40.12m javelin throw.
There was a second spot for Horsham Blue Star in Division 3 SW at Broadbridge Heath when Windsor amassed 281 points to the Blue Star’s 175 and another second spot for Eastbourne at Wimbledon in 3 SE but they put up good fight against Epsom & Ewell scoring 260 to the winners 272 points.
There was a third place for Worthing in 3 SW at Reading and in the same Division Chichester filled fourth place at Broadbridge Heath.
In Division 2 E at Bracknell the home team were run-a-way winners with 245 points while Wycombe, Winchester and Brighton & Hove had a neck and neck battle all afternoon for second spot. Just six points separated the three at the end of the afternoon with the Sussex team finishing in fourth place.
There was another fourth place at Crawley for East Grinstead in another Division 3 SE match.
The weekend.
It is another League Sunday this weekend when the Upper Age Group of the Youth Development League hold their second matches, this season.
In Premier 2 Crawley visit Stevenage while in SW 1A both Brighton & Hove and Team Sussex travel to Kingsmeadow at Kingston.
In SW 2 Chichester undertake the long journey to Ealing in NE 1 Horsham Blue Star compete at Eltham also in NE 1.
