Southern Athletics League and the Weekend

26 May, 2017 By Sussex AA

Last weekend proved a tough weekend for Sussex clubs in the second round of the Southern Athletics League when just the Horsham Blue Star and Hastings teams squeezed into second places, which were the best placings by Sussex teams.

In Division One at Basingstoke Crawley finished third with 169 points behind the home team who scored 245 points and Belgrave on 186.

In Division Two West at Kingsmeadow Brighton & Hove also finished third with 157 points behind Windsor on 251 and Walton’s 187 while in Division Two East at Hornchurch Eastbourne were squeezed into fourth place in a close match that saw Havering win with 211.5 points, followed by  Croydon with 193, London Heathside 191 and Eastbourne’s 188 points.

Four Sussex teams competed in in Division Three matches with Horsham scoring 152.5 points to finish second place in their home match at Broadbridge Heath behind St. Mary’s who totalled 172.

In the same Division, but at Dartford, Hastings also finished second scoring 182 behind South London Harrier’s 234 while the Lewes/Haywards Heath team placed third with 132 points behind Kent 234 and Hercules/Wimbledon 178 in the “B” match at Dartford.

In the “B” match at Broadbridge Heath there was a fourth place for East Grinstead with 110 points behind Epsom and Ewell 252, Holland Sports 209 and Swindon 144.

There was another fourth place for Worthing in their Division Three West match at Winchester where the home team scored 211; Guildford scored 163, Swindon 144 and Worthing 132.

Youth Development League.

On Sunday the second of this season’s Upper Age Group (U17/U20) league matches are being held with several Sussex teams taking part.

Ironically many of the U20 and some U17 athletes who were competing in the Southern Athletics senior matches last weekend will also be involved in this weekend’s battles.

Crawley will compete in Premier One at Bromley while Brighton & Hove travel to Winchester in Division One B and both Horsham Blue Star and Team Sussex (East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, and Lewes) will be in action at Croydon.

NEXT WEDNESDAY the Sussex Schools Combined Events championships will be at Crawley starting at 12.00 while that same evening Brighton Phoenix will be promoting their Annual Open evening at Withdean.
