There was just a token representation of Brighton & Hove and Crawley runners who made the journey to Beckenham for the South of Thames “Senior” cross-country championship on Saturday.
The South of Thames “Senior” is one of the oldest races on the calendar and has been going for more than one hundred years but in recent years changes in the fixture list has squeezed it out of its traditional date, between the County and Area championship events, and it has struggled to find a suitable niche. There was a time when several Sussex clubs were regular attenders but now just Brighton & Hove and Crawley are regular members of the association.
However this year's race it was the Brighton & Hove women who flew the flag as far as Sussex teams were concerned and they achieved fifth placing.
In a team of mainly Veterans Camilla Bishop led them home over the 7 ½ -mile course placing 30th just one place ahead of Paula Blackledge while Phoebe Connolly, who in her first year in the senior age group placed 35th and Rosie Neil 36th. Cathy Ulliott place 50th and Jeanette Kenneally closed in the team in 63rd place with Camilla Moyle non-scoring in 73rd place.
In the Men’s race Guy Christie (Brighton & Hove) finished 121st and Dave Cook (Crawley) 131st while M60 runners Tom Ulliott (Brighton & Hove) and Crawley’s Wally Hill filled 150th and 155th places respectively and earnt themselves silver and bronze medals placings in the M60 group.
