Top Sussex performances are coming thick and fast lately, with British and county records alongside international selections.
This coming weekend, three of our athletes are representing Team GB at the European Athletics Team Championships in Madrid.
Gemma Tutton (LEW) in the pole vault, earning her first Senior GB vest, Archie Davis (PHX) in the 1500m and Toby Harries (PHX) in the 200m.
It marks a great phase for Toby, who clocked 45.13 in Geneva at the weekend, breaking the 25-year Sussex 400m record of 45.2 set by Sean Baldock in 2000.
Another Phoenix athlete, George Mills, is also in strong form. He ran 3:28.36 for 1500m at the Paris Diamond League on 20 June – the fastest time by a Brit this year and the second-fastest ever by a UK athlete. This follows his UK record 5000m time of 12:46.59 at the Oslo Diamond League.
Amber Anning (B&H) has been out in force over the past few weeks. In Paris, she ran 49.96 in the 400m, marking her 7th time clocking under 50 seconds and her first sub-50 since the Olympic final, where she set the British record of 49.29s.
Lewes’ Thomas Roach has made the short trail team selection for the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Canfranc in September.
In the junior age groups, the county U15 boys' pole vault record was broken a few weeks ago by Milo Hilborne (CRA), who leapt to 3.80m — a height that has since been matched by Lewes teammates Bill Scott and Luca Mindel. The trio are presently ranked joint second in the UK U15 boys' list.
Other Sussex records to be broken in the past weeks were the senior women’s long jump where Ruby Jerges (HAR) jumped 6.26m in Croatia, the junior girls’ 1500m with HY’s Isabella Buchanan clocking 4.27.56 and the under 15 boys' 3K with Eastbourne's Byron Roberts clocking 8.45.34 at Watford. This puts Byron 4th on the UK All Time list.
