Slaughter sets record at Sutton

12 September, 2017 By Sussex AA

While the youngsters provided the numbers of competitors it was 60 year Brian Slaughter who provided the records at the Sussex Combined Events championships at Sutton over the weekend.

Slaughter from Eastbourne Rovers has been a fixture of the Sussex athletics scene for the past forty years and he has always been a force in whatever age group he is in.

Slaughter, who had won the National M60 Decathlon title at Sheffield the previous weekend with 7,075 points, where he also beat American opponent in the Biannual UK/USA match.

At Sutton the Master’s only compete in a Pentathlon and Slaughter frightened off all the opposition to let the Eastbourne athlete romp to victory with 3,669 points to move into second place on the British All-time list and break the record he had set way back in 2002.

In the younger events Oscar Tomlinson (Hastings) snatched a close victory, in the U15 boys Pentathlon with 2143 points to 2129, over Brighton & Hove’s Arthur Haines. In the final discipline Tomlinson produced a sparking 800m after Haines had led from the first event while there was a convincing win for Crawley’s Abigail Packham over Cleo Tomlinson (Horsham) in the U15 girls Pentathlon 2710 points to 2512.

There were some good performances in the senior events with Bradley Eisnor (Eastbourne) setting a personal best of 6016, albeit wind assisted, when winning the senior Decathlon from club mate Joe Morris who also set a PB with 5677 points.

In the senior women’s Heptathlon Brighton & Hove’s Becky Owen was less than one hundred points shy of her Pb when scoring 4590 points.

All pretty good efforts despite the largely unhelpful weather conditions.
