The Brighton & Hove Athletic Club senior men’s team notched up the highest Sussex placing at the South of England Road Relays championship at Aldershot over the weekend.
Over the six-lap course Howard Bristow set them off to a good start finishing 11th on the opening lap in 18:34, which was to prove the fastest lap by a Sussex runner.
Max Dumbrell moved up to ninth in 19:03 a place that Stephen Ferroni held in 18:59 while Ashley Humphreys dropped to tenth in 20:01 before James Turner moved up to sixth in 19:47.8 and Andy Donno held sixth place over the final leg in 20:36s one of the highest ever placings by a Sussex team at this event.
The Brighton Phoenix team after a fine 14th placing in 18:53s by Ross Skelton on the first leg slipped down to 24th before Jon Pepper clocking 18:46 on the final leg lifted them up to 20th place.
In the senior Women’s event the Arena 80 Club had a splendid run to finish in seventh place in what was virtually a Veterans team.
The women only race over four laps and Fiona Clark finished ninth of the first leg in 13:04.
Juliette Roberts dropped to 18th in 15:28 before Vicki Clark moved up one place with 14:56s and Julie Briggs stormed back up to seventh on the final leg in 13:45s.
The Chichester Club finished 43rd of the 64 teams that completed the course.
In the “Masters” races the Brighton & Hove O40 team of Camilla Moyle 16:22, Jeanette Kenneally 15:51, Cathy Ulliott 16:10 and Camilla Bishop 15:13 finished fifth while the Haywards Heath O40 men placed 19th.
The highest placing for Sussex over the weekend came from the Horsham Joggers O50 team of Steve Wigmore 22:06, Bryan Camfield 21:37, Dean Angel 22.02 and Peter O’Connell 21:55 who just missed the medals finishing an excellent fourth.
Hove Prom 10km.
Christopher Zablocki was a run-a-way winner of the “Hove Prom 10km” road race on Sunday morning.
Clocking 30:53 he finished more than a minute clear of County 10km champion Daryl Hards (Worthing) who clocked 32:11 who again got the better of Chichester’s James Baker who clocked 32:47 in third place with Kevin Rojas (Brighton & Hove) another minute further back in fourth place in 33:53.
The home club’s Emily Proto was the first woman to finish placing 12th overall in 36:32 with Hellen Buller (Worthing) second in 37:22 and Issy Coomber (Haywards Heath) close behind in third place in 37.28.
