An incredible burst of speed in the final 100 metres moved Brighton Phoenix's Spencer Thomas from fifth on the bend to second on the home straight for an 800m silver medal at the European under-23 Championship in Gavle, Sweden. Thomas ran 1:49.06 but this was a race about position not time.
Yesterday his club mate Tony Harries just missed out on a medal in the 200m final with a time of 21.17s. He had run faster in the heat - 20.86s - and semi 20.97s. His teammate Shemar Boldizsar took the victory in 20.89s.
On Friday former Brighton & Hove AC athlete Cameron Fillery, who competes for Woodford Green and Essex Ladies won a bronze in the 110m hurdles breaking his own Sussex record by seven tenths of a second with a time of 13.60s.
