There was silver and a bronze medal for Sussex athletes on the first day of the England Young Athletes Indoor championships at Sheffield on Saturday.
It was English Schools senior 1,500m champion Robbie Fitzgibbon (Brighton Phoenix) who struck silver after a fine battle with Tonbridge’s James West in the U20 1500m.
West got his nose in front at just the right moment and managed to hold on to his advantages to win in 3:51.79s to the Phoenix athlete’s 3:52.24s.
The bronze medal came in the U15 pole vault where both Freya Fitchett (Lewes) and Natasha Purchase (Crawley) both cleared 2.90m but the Lewes vaulter took the medal on count back.
In the U20 pole vault Livvy Connor (Lewes) cleared 3.40m, which earnt her seventh place while in the U20 long jump there was another seventh place for Katie Garland (Brighton & Hove) who leapt 5.49m while Crawley’s Beth Crocker filled eighth place with 5.45m.
