Rodger fastest in 400m hurdles heats.

1 July, 2018 By Sussex AA

Seb Rodger from Eastbourne will go in to the final of the 400m hurdles at the UK championships a Trials at Birmingham as the fastest qualifier.

Both his main rivals for the title also won their heats in fast times with Jack Green (Kent) clocking 50.68s and Dai Green (Swansea) 51.14s compared to Rodger’s 50.56s. All three will be hoping to crack the 50sec barrier in what could be a very close battle for the title and a place in the UK team for the European Championships in August.

The first day of these championships were largely devoted to heats but there were a few finals and Crawley’s Sam Heawood did well to take fifth place in the shot putt with 15.60m while Chris Scott from Chichester but throws for Southampton placed sixth in the Discus throw with 52.64m. Brighton & Hove’s Katie Garland cleared 1.71m for ninth place in the High jump and Scott Staples (Lewes), who is still in the U20 age group placed tenth in the javelin throw with 56.18m.

In the heats Crawley athlete Matt Overall was sixth in the semi-final of the 400m in 48.5s. Orla Brothers, also Crawley, was fifth in her 400m hurdles heat in 62.68s as was Sussex athlete Rebecca Jenning with a time of 62.57. Holly Turner was sixth in her 400m flat heat in 55.07s.
