Phoenix 16th Brighton & Hove 39th at Sutton Park

Brighton Phoenix and Brighton & Hove Athletic Club flew the Sussex flag at the National six-stage Road Relay championships at Sutton Park on Saturday with both clubs fielding weakened teams.

This did not prevent the Phoenix squad finishing in a highly creditable 16th place in 1hr 50m 56s.

Robbie Fitzgibbon set them off to a fine start finishing eighth in 17:35s which proved the fastest Sussex time of the race. Archie Davis, the youngest member of the team had an excellent run to hold his place in 18.05s while Ros Skelton took the up to fourth place at the half-way mark with a cracking run in 17:43s.

Max Pickard dropped to seventh on the fourth leg in 18:41s and Billy White slipped to 16th on the penultimate leg in 20:03s a position held by Max Dumbrell on the closing leg in 18:48s.

In the Brighton & Hove squad James Turner clocked 18:36s for 43rd place on the opening leg while Stephen Ferroni clocked 18:40s when moving up to 38th and Kevin Moore up to 34th in 19:01 at half-distance.

Howard Bristow made further progress on the fourth leg moving up to 34th in 18:52s.and on the fifth leg veteran Graham Godden slipped to 34th in 20:06s and over the final circuit Paul Howard, who came into the team at the last minute slipped back to 39th with 20:30s for a total time 1hr 55m 50s.
