Olympians at Sussex 10km Race Walking Championships

17 March, 2019 By Sussex AA

In what one walker described as brisk conditions, i.e. strong to gale force winds with showers, 16 took part in the Annual Slater/Bryce Memorial 10K Races.

Dave Annetts M50, of North Herts Road Runners who has not been race walking for very long, took the lead in the Men’s race from the start and looking strong with a good style throughout went on to record an impressive time of 48 - 29.3 in those conditions.

The main race of the morning was with 2 Olympians for the Sussex Men’s Title, Ian Richards M70 of Steyning AC, who represented GB in 1990 and Gyula Dudas M50 of Hungary who now lives in Brighton, who represented Hungary in 2000 and 2004 were together all the way, each trying to make a break without success till the last lap when Gyula managed to pull away from Ian to win his first Sussex Title in 52 - 40.1,

Ian was 6 seconds back and had the consolation of unofficially breaking the World M70 record by 19 sec.

First in the Women’s race was Penelope Cummings W40 of Aldershot F&D in 59 - 12.6, Anne Jones W60 of Steyning AC regained her Sussex Title in 69 - 22.1. In the supporting YAG’s races they all battled the conditions well and all recorded P.B.s.
